2008 IN REVIEW...PRESIDENTIAL CAUCUS IN USO BUILDING
Nevada Mike 30.DEC.08
Hawthorne's USO Building was the site of this years Hawthorne Democratic Party Caucus. Hillary Clinton, by the luck of two card draws, emerged the winner. Both Lou Warner and outgoing Mineral County Commissioner Richard Bryant have been key players in the rejuvination of this vintage building. See USO restoration story just below.

A CAT'S WORK IS NEVER DONE!
Nevada Mike 30.DEC.08
Now that Sam's got the "golf" thing pretty much in paw, she's turned her attention to next years rodeo in Hawthorne. Rounding up and penning sheep or calfs should be a piece of cake. Sam's best time for putting 100 golf balls in the 15 available holes is 17 seconds. If you play Hawthornelive's 15 hole desert classic don't forget to tip the catty.

THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE
Nevada Mike 29.DEC.08
Nevada Mike put an eleven hole golf course, since upgraded to 12, in the Nevadalive wildlife preserve in downtown Hawthorne. Sam, the studio feline, easily mastered the game and added a few strokes of her own. During regulation championship play, she places herself in the fourth hole where she is able to defend the third and fifth holes. Soccer moms are welcome.

OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Proudly serving Hawthorne since 1942, our USO Building is about to get some rest, recreation, and restoration of it's own. The architects arrive Monday to finalize plans to bring the inside up to full fire code compliance in time for next year's schedule of community events thanks to a grant submitted by Fair and Rec.

Planning, Architecture & Urban Design of Henderson, Nevada, in conjuction with H.D.A. Architecture, Planning & Interior Design of Carsen City has been awarded the historic restoration of the Mineral County USO Building in Hawthorne, Nevada. The project entails a comphrehensive facility analysis of the historic property and the restoration of its major interior spaces. The work will be directed by the firms' senior principals Dr. Robert Freiden, NCARB, FAIA and Arthur Hannafin, AIA.
The Hawthorne USO was one of only two ever built in Nevada. It was constructed in 1941 and opened in January of 1942 providing social activity for the military forces serving the nation. During World War Two there were as many as 10,000 people a month using the Hawthorne facilities for dances, banquets, awards ceromonies, music, movies, dramatic performances, boxing matches and meetings for various groups and orginzations. After the war ended the USO reverted to Mineral County to be used as a community and recreation center, a role it continues to play today.
IT WAS SUNNY AND CLEAR DOWNTOWN TODAY, BUT THE MOUNTAINS WERE STILL IN WINTER MODE. FORCAST INCLUDES SNOW FLAKES IN THE VALLEY AS WELL LATER IN THE DAY AND SUNDAY.

....THE GIFT OF MY FATHER....
WILL PAY DIVIDENDS FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. WHAT IS GIVEN FROM THE HEART LIVES FOREVER. IN THE LIVES OF ALL IT TOUCHES.
Nevada Mike 25.DEC.08
....Is the same gift I shared with my own son, Hitomi Desi, who now shares my dad with generations he might otherwise have never known. Just when you thought this would be the first Christmas without dad, he is there, more than ever, bigger than life itself. To my dad, Larry.
In 2003 Nevada Mike planted a "hawthorne" tree to celebrate a life still being lived....
I am my dad's son.... A Christmas update:
Many of you that visit these pages regularly know that my dad passed away this fall. This was to be our first Christmas Eve family gathering that he had not been with us in my memory. I even brought a favorite picture of him fly fishing for those elusive trout at Lake Lucile in California's Desolation Valley, the namesake for my own son, Hitomi "Desi.
I never brought the picture in, as it seemed that dad was already present, as usual. Mom came with Harry, a long time family friend. Harry gave the prayer, noting how dad would be missed. Afterwards I commented that dad might not missed too much, since he was standing behind mom and Harry. Everyone chuckled. Later in the evening Harry and I struck up a conversation and I moved my chair closer so we could better converse. We started with observations on politics and wisely moved on to other topics.
I talked about my new life in Hawthorne. Harry asked how I managed to not be lonely in such a small remote community? I asked him if he felt lonely being in a room with only 15 or 20 people celebrating Christmas? He replied of course not. I suggested then that a community of over 3,000 people was quite sufficient to keep a dialogue and a life moving forward. Even Mark Twain had made those observations.
I told Harry that for the first time in my life I was living in a way and doing things that I enjoyed. Harry was ok with that, but still not quite convinced. It occoured to me as I spoke to Harry in that moment, that my words were much less my own, but rather the thoughts and feelings of my father who had often sat there with Harry on so many previous Christmas Eves.
It was at this moment that Harry turned back to me and shared a most timely observation of his own. He said, "you know Lee, for so long your dad and I have attended these yearly gatherings and have sat here discussing the precious moments of our lives as the younger ones celebrated Christmas all about us. Listening to you speak it's almost as if I were here with your dad tonight."
It was at this moment that my dad and I, after so many years together in "real" life, finally became one in spirit. My own son, Hitomi, played nearby with daughters Amaya and Hannah. The spirit of Christmas present is closer than we sometimes acknowledge. My father, my son, celebrating and beholding the "one" in all.
May this be you most blessed Christmas yet.
"Always do right.
This will gratify some and astonish the rest."
MARK MY WORDS!

IS LIFE WORTH A SECOND LOOK?

This week, over 127,000
visitors will have found their way to Hawthornelive in the past few months. Many live here in Hawthorne, but almost two-thirds of you share our community only through cyberspace. Occasionally you wander down the 95 from Reno on your way to Las Vegas and as you pass through you appreciate that some times life is a great deal more than meets the eyes. More than a few of you have actually moved here, partly because your journey to Hawthorne began here.
When I moved to Hawthorne a few years ago I made a few changes in my life, many of which are shared with you daily on these pages. The most imporatant change I made was to celebrate the essence of Christmas present every moment of every day. This resolve was only strengthened after working for several months at Sky View Academy, a school, now closed, that dedicated itself to rediscovering the inner child of troubled teens in need of major life changes.
I quickly learned that the same inner child dwelled in children of all ages and that it's growth and nurturing was key to our future. In short, sometimes a "second chance" is better than the "first"... Our Christmas present to you this year, is all the special moments we have captured on these pages in months past. We hope you'll take a moment and revisit the many places we have shared in the days that brought us here. And together, we'll soon create an even better tomorrow.
DO YOU HEAR WHAT WE HEAR?
